Professor Anthony Smith was a social and behavioural epidemiologist specialising in sexuality, sexual behaviour and sexual health. His research focused on sexual cultures and their change over time. He was a Chief Investigator on the first Australian Study of Health and Relationships, the Australian Longitudinal Study of Health and Relationships, and the 1997, 2002, 2008 and 2013 surveys of Secondary Students and Sexual Health. His methodological interests included cross-sectional, longitudinal, multilevel and social network studies of sexual behaviour. Sadly, Professor Smith died during data collection for the Second Australian Study of Health and Relationships. In completing the study, his colleagues are indebted to his work for its imagination, breadth of vision and superb epidemiological and sociological scholarship.
